Since 1978, we have aimed to work for the equality of lesbian, gay, bisexual, trans and intersex people and their liberation from all forms of discrimination. We seek to achieve this aim through the world-wide cooperation and mutual support of our members.
The vision of ILGA is of a world where all human rights of all are respected and where everyone can live in equality and freedom; a world where global justice and equity are assured and established regardless of the people’s sexual orientations, gender identities, gender expressions and sex (intersex).
Our Mission
T0 fulfill this vision, the mission of ILGA is:
To act as a leading organisation and a global voice for the rights of those who face discrimination on the grounds of sexual orientation, gender identity and/or gender expression and sex (intersex),
To work towards achieving equality, freedom and justice for lesbian, gay, bisexual, trans and intersex people through advocacy, collaborative actions, and by educating and informing relevant international and regional institutions as well as governments, media and civil society,
To empower our members and other human rights organisations in promoting and protecting human rights, irrespective of people’s sexual orientation, gender identity and/or gender expression and sex (intersex) and to facilitate cooperation and solidarity among ILGA regions and members,
To promote diversity and strengths of LGBTI people around the world.
ILGA – the International Lesbian, Gay, Bisexual, Trans and Intersex Association, is the world federation of national and local organisations dedicated to achieving equal rights for lesbian, gay, bisexual, trans and intersex (LGBTI) people.
ILGA is an umbrella organisation of more than 1100 member organisations presented in six different regions including: Pan Africa Ilga, Ilga-Asia, Ilga-Europe, Ilga-LAC (Latin America and the Caribbean), Ilga North-America andIlga-Oceania (Aotearoa/New Zealand, Australia and Pacific Islands).
Established in 1978, ILGA enjoys consultative status at the UN ECOSOC Council, publishes an annual world report and a map on legislation criminalising or protecting people on the basis of their sexual orientation or recognising their relationships.
Currently funded by several governments (Sweden, Finland, Norway, the Netherlands) and private foundations (including Arcus, Hivos, OSF), ILGA has a budget of one million euros, five staff members based in the head office in Geneva, one staff member based in Africa, two in LAC and in Autumn one in Asia.

We focus public and government attention on cases of discrimination against LGBTI people by supporting programs and protest actions, asserting diplomatic pressure, providing information and working with international organisations and the international media.
ILGA’s success lies in the achievements and progress of 1044 member organisations from 117 countries, working together.
Any organisation, business or individual interested in working for equal rights for LGBTI persons may apply to become a member of ILGA. Every one or two years, members of ILGA gather in a world conference to give guidance to its work. ILGA’s work is determined by the rules set forth in its Constitution and Standing Orders.
